A YATE Town fan got more that she bargained for when her partner of four-and-a-half years got down on one knee and proposed in front of the crowds at a legends match on Sunday.
Lyndon Pullen proposed to partner Liz Weller during half time at the Manchester United, Yate Town legends game on July 26.
Lyndon had organised the surprise engagement with Liz’s brother Paul Dempsey, who had returned to Lodge Road to play for the veteran Bluebells side.
At half time, staff from Yate Town came out onto the pitch with a huge banner that simply said “Liz will you marry me” the crowds cheered as Lyndon popped the question.
Liz said she was so shocked by the proposal, it took her a while to say yes.
The pair who have five children between them had travelled from London to watch the match as Yate Town beat Man United 5-3.
Liz said the proposal was typical of Lyndon’s personality, and a small quiet affair would not have been his style.
The mother-of-four, who works in a maternity hospital, said: “I had no idea about any of it.
“It’s typical of Lyndon though, we were in Seville last week which was nice and quiet, but nope – he chooses to propose in front of 2,000 people!
“I was in complete shock, which is why I couldn’t look at him and I think it took a while for me to say yes!”
A friend of Lyndon had made the huge banner and it had been sent to Paul during months of secret planning.
Liz said they are now going ahead with wedding plans that include marrying at Cheddar Gorge with family from across the world set to make the trip.
Liz added: “The whole day was brilliant the atmosphere was amazing, the amount of people that congratulated us was unbelievable, we are just so happy.”
