Can you tell us a bit more about your winning wedding film?
I knew from the first meeting with Claire and Brian, that their wedding would be a challenge. When discussing the style for their video, we soon realised that their love for Moulin Rouge combined with a gorgeously opulent wedding gown by Ian Stuart, a proper choreographed first dance, and fireworks would suit the dramatic and theatrical setting of Allerton Castle perfectly. Claire’s background in music accounted for the performances of a horn player, an opera singer and a string & piano trio. As these musicians were also their friends the importance to capture this was second to none. Despite the weather, Claire and Brian had a wonderful wedding day and love their very personal wedding film. Claire and Brian loved our work and we were given cart blanche for the edit. Sylvia knew straight away the footage and audio of the day lend themselves perfectly to a short form edit. Minutes after receiving the award we texted Claire and she was just as ecstatic as we were that her wedding film had won.
When did you decide to start a wedding film company?
After finishing my BA(Hons) in Film Studies and being recently married, I found myself in a unique position. I felt I had both the passion and the know-how to stand out and make this medium my own. As both our educations have roots in art history, we can’t deny the influence this has had on our work. Over the years Ever After has gown considerably and I feel proud and privileged to have assisted brides and grooms in preserving their wedding day memories. We constantly strive to better our productions, learning new techniques from all around the world and adapting ourselves to stay at the top of the market. We were among the first videographers in the UK to make Same Day Edits at weddings. These days our Signature Edits, a short form editing technique using time shifting, voice-overs and cinematic music, are at the cutting edge of wedding videography.
What do you think makes a wedding film a must-have for brides?
I feel a wedding film has the unique ability to record and help you relive the emotions of the day. Seeing the expressions of family and friends, your partner’s smile and tears as you see each other for the first time on the day, … it is an emotional roller coaster. Listening back to your vows and hearing yourselves be proclaimed ‘husband and wife’ just draws you straight back into the day. You don’t just see a smile on your loved ones, you see and hear how it got there!
A wedding always has a lot of expenses. There’s the dress, the shoes, the venue, the food, the flowers, the cake, … A wedding film is something else, it is an investment. The money you spend on it know will make sure you’ll have the best memories of your special day, far exceeding any value you can place on it.
How do you make sure your films are so personal?
Before the wedding day, we don’t just discuss the timing and places, we make sure we know what is important to our clients. I often think it’s the little things that make a difference: knowing the groom is wearing his grandfather’s watch or bride’s earrings are a family heirloom. Every wedding is different and everyone has a different taste in films and music. By talking about these things, we make sure we get the camera angle or edit pace just perfect to make sure the wedding film will be their wedding film. We stress the uniqueness of each of our productions and explain our longer delivery times are closely linked to our ‘non-cookie-cutting’ philosophy.
What's a 'no no' for modern day wedding videos?
Shaky camera work is definitely a no no! Poor composition and sound is also a no no!
Trivia:
Both Sylvia and Niels are avid musicians and have played in numerous concert bands and orchestras.
Niels and Sylvia are both from Belgium and moved to Sheffield in 1999, we came to study but decided to stay as we much prefer it over Belgium (although the chocolate and beer still gets imported from over there)
Darren Bennett and Lilia Kopylova, professional dancers from Strictly come Dancing, have taught Sylvia and Niels when they were part of the Sheffield Universities Dance Competition Team.
