FX Films – Combines special effects and wedding videos

Full Name: Richard Wakefield
Company Name: FX Films Position: Cameraman/Editor/Director
So what is your unique and creative style?
Whilst filming a wedding we’re always thinking a few steps ahead, and capturing subjects in a certain compositional way that will suit the editing later on. We’ll also use top of the range lenses and Hollywood-esque equipment such as steadicam equipment to ‘glide’ our cameras around. These bring a fluidity of movement to shots that adds "WOW" factor by the bucket load.
Then, in the editing stage, we’ll spend up to an hour per minute of footage meticulously grading colours and tweaking the ‘look’ to make sure each and every shot is at its best. But we go one step further and use additional editing software which allows us to utilise our creative skills. For instance, we can place your footage into 3D layers, animate particular aspects, and use motion blur and plugins for realism.
Can you give examples of some fun and creative wedding edits?
We’ve listened to each and every one of our couples and developed a final DVD that is so very personal to them.
For Claire and Russell, we gave their footage a Moulin Rouge ‘look’, and for Kelly and Dave we visually transferred their love of Carry On films to their own Love Story.
Every wedding edit we do is never the same as the last, and this reflects the difference in each couple’s personality.
What do you feel contributes to the success of FX Films?
We continually strive to be unique and forward-thinking in our approach to filming and editing. All the while we are quietly spanning the horizons, and watching for successful trends amongst superb International Wedding Videographers. In doing this, we've been able to see a future direction for UK wedding films.
From the very beginning with our wedding shoots, we have applied inspired ideas and much of our own unique style to our edits, and confidently feel we are now pushing to new levels of filming and editing.
Our customers are constantly congratulating us on making their DVD for them, with a feel so very different to the many others out there.
How will you aim to ‘keep on top’ and remain so different?
Right now we are trying out depth-of-field adaptors to enhance our HD filming. These help to create subject focus and clarity, which in turn opens new doors and will make our footage look even more cinematic, and capture emotions as never before.
Networking as close friends with international videographers has enabled us to share and develop further filming ideas, and you’ll see these being put to use in wedding highlights on our blog throughout the year.
